Greg Ikehara-Martin
became our pastor in 2004. His sermons are thought-provoking and they bring the
Bible to life in our current situations. Come hear for yourself! You won't be
disappointed.
Greg was born December 18, 1955, and grew up as Greg Martin in Monrovia, CA
(just east of Los Angeles.) A fifth-generation member of First Presbyterian,
Monrovia, he was active in youth group and choir as a teenager and was elected
an elder during his junior year in high school. He was also made a delegate to
San Gabriel Presbytery.
After Graduating from Monrovia High School, Greg attended Pomona
College
(Claremont), where he began to feel a call to ministry. Also while at Pomona, he
met fellow student Laura Ikehara, who grew up in Hawaii.
Greg attended Princeton Seminary (NJ). He and Laura were married after
his first
year at Princeton. While back east,
Laura got her MSW (Master
of Social Work) degree from Rutgers University. Laura
is a Clinical Social
Worker in private practice in Vancouver, where the
Ikehara-Martins have
lived since 1992.
Greg was ordained June 5, 1983, after accepting a call to be Associate
Pastor of
Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard. Greg was Associate at Calvin for 8 years
and Interim Pastor for a ninth. He then moved to Vancouver, WA, as organizing
pastor of the New Church Development which has become East Woods Presbyterian
Church. Greg was with East Woods for almost 7 years.
Greg also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from George Fox University. He has
both Oregon and Washington teaching certificates.
Greg and Laura have three children: Rachel, a college student at Western
Washington University in Bellingham; Andrew, a college student at
Knox College in Galesburg, IL;
and Timothy, a student at Columbia River HS. Andrew and Timothy both play
advanced-competition soccer year-round.
Besides watching soccer, Greg enjoys hiking, running, bird watching, stargazing, tennis, gardening (when it’s dry), reading, classical music, and all sorts of card and board games, when it’s wet or dark. Greg plays the guitar and loves to sing.
